Project Description
Located in Stanmore, Harrow, this 1940s Laing-built semi-detached home had fallen into significant disrepair when acquired by the client. With only a modest 2.5m rear extension in place, the property lacked the spatial quality and functionality desired for modern living. As part of a full house refurbishment, the client’s ambition was not just to restore, but to reimagine the property entirely. The aim was to create a striking, contemporary home that maximised internal space, opened up the rear elevation to light and landscape, and introduced a high standard of detailing and material finish throughout. This was a rare opportunity to modernise a typical mid-century home while respecting the street’s character—and to do so with bold, confident design.
What followed was a complete transformation of the interior layout and external presence, delivering a seamless blend of open-plan living, crafted lighting design, and strong material clarity. From the crisp LED recesses in the ceiling to the framed garden views, every element was refined to bring modern elegance to a previously tired and outdated house.
This extension doesn't just enlarge the footprint—it elevates the home. The result is a space that is calm, confident and future-facing, designed to adapt as lifestyles evolve.

Case Study
This project stands as an example of how modest extensions, when handled with precision and ambition, can deliver outsized spatial impact. From the outset, the brief centred on unlocking volume and daylight without overdeveloping the plot. The design achieves this through careful spatial zoning, a restrained material palette, and layered lighting strategies that articulate depth and atmosphere.
A key move was repositioning the kitchen as the focal point of the plan—anchoring the new rear extension with a monolithic island beneath sculpted recessed lighting. Sliding doors allow the entire space to dissolve into the garden, while high-performance glazing maintains thermal comfort. The ceiling design became a tool for shaping light and visual rhythm, with concealed LED strips guiding the eye through each space and establishing a sense of cohesion.
Rather than competing with the original structure, the new extension complements it with a pared-back modern language. Internally, the shift from cellular rooms to open living promotes flexibility, creating a home fit for contemporary family life. This case demonstrates how small-scale residential interventions, when carefully executed, can punch above their weight.
