Most garages in London were built at a time when vehicles in general were smaller. A lot of garages within London cannot handle the modern sized car and the space is used as additional storage for the house. A common way to create an additional bedroom is to convert the existing garage into a habitable room. This would entail removing the garage door and replacing it with a window and insulating the internal walls to meet current building regulations. In most case a garage conversion will not require planning permission however if your property is listed, in a conservation area or has a covenant placed within the deeds then planning permission would be required as well as other permissions.
